[expand title=”Click to expand and read history and demographics of Richland”]The city of Richland is rich in history, given its ties to the Manhattan Project and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

Richland was a small berg of just 300 residents before the U.S. government and its mission to produce plutonium during World War Two caused the population to swell to around 25,000.

The Manhattan Project and subsequent conversion to a nuclear plant in the Hanford area has left us with the area known as the Gold Coast Historic District. The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This area comprises the unique “alphabet homes” that were built during the Hanford build-up.

Visit these parks on any summer day and you’ll see how many residents and visitors appreciate the waterfront. Howard Amon is also the site of many popular annual events including Ye Merrie Greenwood Faire, the Allied Arts Annual Art in the Park show, and the Tumbleweed Music Festival.

Richland’s Parkway off George Washington way hosts a weekly farmers’ market. Each Friday until mid-October you’ll find an array of vendors from 9:00am-1:00pm.

Christ the King School’s annual Sausage Fest is a big draw each fall in Richland. The school hosts this Bavarian-themed festival on its grounds with food booths, carnival games, bingo, and the ever-popular beer gardens, complete with oompa-loompa bands. Richland is also home to the Tri-Cities branch campus of Washington State University, allowing students to complete four-year degrees from a world-class institution.

Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland is the area’s largest hospital. The facility is named after one of its first patients, Lt. Col. Harry Kadlec. He was also the hospital’s first death.
